Hybrid multimode resonators based on grating-assisted counter-directional couplers.
Research thrusts in silicon photonics are developing control operations using higher order waveguide modes for next generation high-bandwidth communication systems. In this context, devices allowing optical processing of multiple waveguide modes can reduce architecture complexity and enable flexible on-chip networks. We propose and demonstrate a hybrid resonator dually resonant at the 1st and 2...
متن کاملDesign Considerations in Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers Based on Grating-Assisted Null Couplers
The performance of a fully optimized optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), based on null couplers and tilted Bragg gratings, is studied in detail. It is shown that maximization of the device performance involves three main optimization steps. First, the waveguide asymmetry ( 2 1 ratio) should be optimized in order to minimize the extinction ratio of the unwanted mode at the null coupler waist. S...
متن کاملGrating-Assisted Fibre-Slab Couplers
Coupled-mode equations for an asymmetric fibre-to-planar optical coupling system, incorporated a grating structure are presented. A grating-assisted coupling coefficient is described. When the parameters of the coupler are such that there is no phase synchronism between the fibre and the slab modes, the grating enhances the coupling in both the resultant amplitude and phase modulation. However,...
متن کاملAdd–drop filter based on apodized surface-corrugated gratings
We report on the fabrication of a grating-based add–drop filter in SiON planar waveguide technology. We achieved apodization of the Bragg grating by concatenating subgratings with various duty cycles. We present the theoretical and experimental dependence of the coupling coefficient on the duty cycle, which leads to a minimum coupling coefficient of 30%. With a breeder genetic algorithm we were...
متن کاملCompact grating couplers on silicon-on-insulator with reduced backreflection.
The backreflection in commonly used grating couplers on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) is not negligible for many applications. This reflection is dramatically reduced in our improved compact grating coupler design, which directs the reflection away from the input waveguide. Realized devices on SOI show that the reflection can be reduced down to -50 dB without an apparent transmission penalty.
